An eagle on the par 5, 5th
hole helped Adam Schenk take a one shot lead during the opening round of the
113th Indiana Amateur Championship.
The rising senior at Purdue University had a bogey free round today and
carded a 4-under-par 67 at South Bend CC.
“I didn’t do anything
particularly special today, I just didn’t make many mistakes,” Schenk
said. “My eagle on five was definitely a
highlight and other than that I just hit some chips close and made putts when I
needed to.”
Schenk also carded two birdies coming
on the par 4, 11th hole and the par 4, 16th hole.
“I hope to get off to a good
start on the back nine tomorrow,” Schenk said.
“If I can take advantage of the drivable holes on the front nine, which
I didn’t do today, then I should be in really good shape.”
Andrew Fogg, who will enter his junior
year at Indiana University, sits alone in second after firing a 3-under-par 68.
“I eagled number 12 and hit it really well all day,” Fogg
said. “I only missed one or two fairways
and if I had gotten some more putts to fall it could have been a really special
round.”
Former club member, Scott Lamb is
in a tie for third after firing a 2-under-par 69 today. Lamb grew up playing golf at South Bend CC
and his familiarity of the course proved to work in his advantage. The recent
graduate from Rollins College in Florida plans on attending Q school this Fall
along with his brother.
“I seemed to miss in all the right spots
today,” Lamb said. “I hope to keep putting
myself in good positions on the course for the rest of the week.”
Also tied for third is recent IPFW
graduate, Drew Imel. Both Imel and Lamb are just two shots out of the lead.
Quentyn Carpenter, a soon-to-be freshman
at Ball State University, fired a 1-under-par 70 today after just having
participated in the ISHAA State Finals this past week.
“I took didn’t play or practice
for three days after state,” Carpenter said.
“This was my first time seeing this course and I am happy with how I
played today. I hope to make the cut and
we’ll see what happens from there.”
There are currently five players
tied with Carpenter at 1-under-par.
