Williamson & Carter Take Home Senior, Super-Senior Amateur Titles

Aug 24, 2018

Crawfordville’s Dave Williamson came from behind today at Hillcrest CC in Indianapolis to win his first-ever IGA Senior Amateur Championship.  Williamson headed to today’s final round one shot behind Mike Bell of Indianapolis.

The par-4, 8th proved to be a turning point for Williamson, as he made a tremendous par with an up-and-down out of the bunker to grab a share of the lead with Bell.  Williamson went on the make back-to-back birdies on holes 9 and 10 and saw his lead grow to three shots heading to the par-4, 11th.

“Making par on 8 and following that with two birdies was definitely a momentum shift for me,” said Williamson.

Despite carding two bogeys in his last eight holes, Williamson was able to maintain a three shot victory, finishing the event at even par.

“It means a lot to be able to win this event,” said Williamson.  “My mom is not doing very well right now, so she was on my mind out on the course today.  I want to thank my parents for all they have done for me throughout the years to help me succeed in golf.”

Ron Carter of Monticello captured the title in the Super-Senior Amateur division.  Carter posted a two-day total of 5-over-par, 147 to finish in a tie for first place with Michael Stephens of Carmel, forcing a playoff for the title.

Carter and Stephens headed to the par-4, 1st where they both hit straight tee shots and put themselves in birdie range on the green.  Stephens went on to miss his birdie attempt, and Carter converted his putt for the win.

“I played pretty solid both days,” said Carter.  “I hit my driver straight, which is important on a tight course like this and I never had a three putt.”

This is Carter's first Super-Senior Amateur Championship title.

“It is nice to get a win today,” said Carter.  “This is the same field of guys that I’ve been playing with for years, so they always make it competitive.”

Carter is scheduled to compete in four national events later this year, but has a possible surgery on the horizon and might be out of commission for the remainder of the year.
