Werner and Carter Co-Medal at Senior Match Play

Aug 27, 2014

Terry Werner and Ron Carter shared medalist honors today at
Hillview CC during the qualifying portion of the IGA Senior Match Play
Championship. The duo fired 4-under-par,
68s to claim seeds two and three behind last year’s Champion Dave Vlasic who
was automatically seeded first.

“I made one bogey and five birdies,” said Carter of
Monticello, Ind. “When it comes to match
play, I just continue to play the best golf I can. After 13 holes, I like to see where I stand,
but I don’t pay much attention to my competitors.”

Carter will face Steve Coyne during tomorrow’s opening
match. Werner, who claimed the second
seed looks for his second win of the season, with his first coming in May at
the Indiana PGA Senior Open. He will
play Skip Runnels tomorrow morning.

Mike Bell and Steve Sterrett posted 3-under-par, 69s to
claim seeds four and five.

“I hit the ball really well today and had five birdies,”
Bell said. “Match play is a whole
different game and seeding isn’t all that important. You can let go of high numbers and move on
easily. With that said, I like the
position I am in and feel confident heading to tomorrow.”

After defeating Skip Runnels on the 18th hole in
last year’s Championship Match, Vlasic is once again in a good position heading
to match play.  He faces Chuck Wenning tomorrow.

“I’m hitting the ball pretty well and the golf course is
perfect,” said Vlasic of Valparaiso. “The
course sets up well for my game and I just need to continue to hit
fairways. The rough is pretty thick out
there so it is important to hit the ball straight and hit greens. I look forward to tomorrow and would love to
make it to the finals again.”

In the Super Senior Division, Greg McCall posted the low
score, firing a 1-under-par, 71. McCall claimed
the number one seed heading to the match play portion of competition.

“I didn’t miss any
fairways and I hit a lot of greens,” said McCall of Indianapolis. “I’m just having fun and went out there with
no expectations. I’m having a great time
playing golf with my buddies.”

McCall will face Chuck Welter during tomorrow’s opening
match. The Super Senior Division
consists of eight players.
