Three Teams Tie For Championship at the IGA Senior Team

May 12, 2022

Skip Runnels and Terry Werner went into the final day of the event with a two stroke lead over four teams with a first round score of  6-under-par (66). When the day was finished they stood atop the leaderboard alongside the team of David Belville and Matt Schmidt and the team of Chuck Wenning and Steve Sterrett. All three teams tied at 9-under-par and due to a rule change in 2020 (no playoff for team events), all three teams walked away with the title of champion.

During the final round of the Senior Team Championship, Wenning and Sterrett had the low round of the day of seven-under (67) with birdies on holes 1,7,9, and 15-18. “The important thing is that we played two days and didn’t make a Bogey. We really never made anything longer than a 3-4 footer to save par. We did not putt very well, and honestly, yesterday we didn’t play very well. But if you don’t make any Bogeys, you’re at least hanging in there” Sterett said.

Skip Runnels and Terry Werner came into the last hole one stroke down. Both players had 18ft for birdie but it took only Werner’s putt to secure their title. “We knew one of us had to make that putt because we knew where we stood, and I poured it right in there,” Werner said.

Belville and Schmidt finished their second round 6-under-par (66), largely due to securing seven Birdies during today’s round, with five of those taking place on the back side. Belville and Schmidt played together in the Senior Team Championship the year prior, and had great things to say about their experience.

“We played in this last year, and we both said the same thing when we were done. It’s a lot of fun to play with all of these guys that play golf. It’s just such a joy to be competitive and be with friends and meet new people” Belville said.
