Terry Posts 70 to Take First Day Lead

Jun 18, 2012

Carmel, Ind. – With long fescue grass guarding most fairways and a 25 mile per hour wind doing its best to push shots off-line, Tyler Merkel’s 71 at the Indiana Amateur Championship at Prairie View Golf Club seemed difficult to beat. Ball State’s Merkel surpassed the morning’s average by eight strokes, as scores continued to come in higher than anticipated. “I controlled the flight of my shots well which was important with this wind,” said Merkel. “And I kept it in the fairway which makes this course a lot easier.”

As wind continued to pick up for the afternoon groups, David Mills, an Indiana University collegiate player, still managed to play strong matching Merkel’s 71.

“I thought I stayed in it really well,” Mills said.  “I was three over through six, but stuck it out and played one shot at a time.”

With just three groups left on the course, Ryan Terry, of Lipscomb University, came in with an impressive 2-under par 70, taking an unexpected lead.

“I controlled the ball really well today,” said Terry.  “I’m usually a good wind player so that worked to my advantage.”

Terry, Mills, and Merkel are all from Evansville, Ind.

After tomorrow’s round, the field of 156 will be cut to the low 60 and ties.  Five players currently have a share of third place at even par 72.
