Smith Takes Medalist Honors at IGA Senior Match Play Championship

Aug 27, 2013

Wilkinson’s Ted Smith fired a 2-under-par 68 today
at the IGA Senior Match Play Championship held at Delaware CC to claim the
number two seed heading into the Match Play portion of competition. Fort Wayne’s Sam Till will be seeded first due
to his win at last year’s event.

“I got a lot of good breaks today and I made some
important putts,” Smith said. “My
highlight of the day came on the par 4, 10th hole. I had a chip for par and figured I would make
no better than bogey, but I chipped in.”

Smith had five birdies today coming on the par 4, 3rd,
the par 5, 4th, the par 4, 5th, the par 4, 7th,
and the par 4, 17th. He also
carded on bogey on the par 3, 6th, and a double bogey on the par 3,
14th.

“I’m happy with how I played overall,” Smith
said. “But I know I’ll still have a
tough match tomorrow no matter who I play.”

Smith put himself in a good position heading into
tomorrow and is looking for his fourth IGA victory, with previous wins coming in
’02 at the Senior Team Championship (with partner Jerry Caplinger) and in ’01 and ’10 at
the Senior Amateur Championship.

Smith will face the number 15 seed Carl Hobbs of
Elwood.

Sixteen players, including Till qualified for Match
Play. Matches will begin tomorrow
morning at 9 a.m.
