PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2016) –
Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound and Bill Schumaker of Columbia City, Ind., won playoffs Thursday to claim titles in the PGA Quarter Century Championship at PGA Golf Club.
San Filippo, an instructor at Trump International Golf Club, made a 20-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to defeat Gene Fieger of Naples in the 64-and-Under division after both shot 68 to finish 10-under 134.
Schumaker won with a par on the first playoff hole when Steve Heckel – who shot a 64 – three-putted. They also finished at 10-under in the 65-and-Older division.
San Filippo almost won on the first playoff hole on the Wanamaker Course, but lipped out a 4-foot birdie putt. He birdied the next two to win his first PGA Winter Championship event since 2008.
“I never led until the last playoff hole,” San Filippo said. “Gene got out early with birdies on 1 and 2, and I was still trying to hang with him. It’s always great to win, but the best part of this tournament is seeing all of my old friends.”
Fieger had a two-shot lead at the turn, but made only one more birdie on the back nine. Neither player had a bogey in the 21 holes.
“We’ve been playing against each other since the late-1980s,” Fieger said. “He deserved it. He’s a real good player. If he had made some putts, he would have won it outright.”
Schumaker finished second last year to Bob Dickson, but finally broke through with his first PGA Winter Series title. He birdied the final hole, then learned in the scoring tent he was in a playoff.
“I’m kind of glad I didn’t know or I probably wouldn’t have made the 20-foot putt on the last hole,” said Schumaker, longtime owner of Crooked Lake Golf Club. “It’s very gratifying to win one of these.”
Heckel had to wait more than hour after shooting a 30 on his back nine to see if he would get into a playoff. He didn’t blame the bogey on the delay.
“I moved on that last putt,” Heckel said. “But you have to make a lot of putts to shoot 64. It was fun making those.”
Three players finished tied for third in the 64-and-Under at 137: Mark Anderson (67) of St. Simons Island, Ga.; David Young (68) of Scarborough, N.Y.; and Gary Trivisonno (69) of Aurora, Ohio.
In the 65-and-Older, Pete Oakley of Palm City shot a 65 to finish tied for third at 137 with Steve Benson (68) and Freddy Gibson (70).
Bob Zimmerman of Port St. Lucie can thank his wife Dawn for him winning his first PGA Half Century Championship after he shot his second consecutive 1-over 73.
“I wasn’t going to enter, but my wife forced me to play in this,” he said. “She’s going to be happy because I’m coming home with $1,200.”
Zimmerman, 75, finished two shots ahead of playing partner Bill Erfurth (75) of Northbrook, Ill. Erfurth, at 86 the oldest player in the field, was 3-under after seven holes, but was 6-over the rest of his round to settle for second place.
“I just ran out of juice, I guess,” said Erfurth, who has won four Half Century Championships.
