Potter Wins IWGA Indiana Golf Championship

Jul 19, 2017

Julia Potter has done a lot of winning on the IWGA circuit the past few years, but up until this point she had yet to win all the events the IWGA offered. Created in 2014, the Indiana Golf Championship features Overall, Mid-Am and Senior competitions and in the first three years, Potter won the 25 & over Mid-Am division twice, but had only finished as high as third overall. This year, Potter carded an opening round 5-under-par 67 at Otter Creek G.C. for a one-shot lead over Tobi Herron and followed it up firing a final round 4-under-par 68 to win by five shots. When asked if it carried extra meaning to win and event for the first time, Potter replied, “Yes it does. I can finally say I have won every IWGA event. That is really important to me and I’m happy I can finally say it.”

Carrying a one-shot lead into the final round, Potter found herself in a familiar position as she held a 7-shot lead to start the final round of the IWGA Women’s Amateur recently. That final round was a struggle as Potter ended up finishing second so being back in that position gave here something to prove. “Definitely,” Potter said when asked if she felt some additional pressure to finish. “I have had issues all summer not being able to follow up a good round with another one and it has really shaken my confidence at times.” Simply playing a good round seemed to be the key this time for Potter. “I made sure that was my focus, not to worry about the lead, but more about following up a good round with another,” said Potter. “I think that was the difference between the Am and this event.”

In total, Potter made 14 birdies in 36 holes, which she attributed to a mix of good putting and getting herself in position for birdie opportunities, but after six holes in the final round, Herron had pulled even with her. Potter went on to birdie six of her next nine holes, which stretched her lead to seven, with the final margin of victory five shots. “My approach shots were key to that stretch,” Potter said. “I hit three shots within a foot of the hole and when you’re able to do that it definitely makes for a less stressful round.”

Potter won both the Overall and Mid-Am divisions, with Herron runner-up, while Julie Carmichael was the Senior Champion. Net Division winners were Maddison Cody, Herron and Carmichael.
