Eight-time IWGA Player of the Year and two-time USGA Champion, Julia Potter-Bobb, of Indianapolis, is off to a solid start to the 2020 tournament season. Potter-Bobb fired a 3-under-par, 69 today at Anderson Country Club to claim the title at the first women’s event of the season, the IWGA Indiana Golf Championship.
“The greens were really difficult to hold,” Potter-Bobb said. “That’s not really my strong suit. So, I was really happy to be able to adjust to that. It gives me some really great confidence going into the Women’s Am knowing that I can adjust to the different courses out there.”
Competitors Erica Shepherd, Greenwood, and Annabelle Pancake, Zionsville, got off to fast starts, but Potter-Bobb’s finish sealed their fate. Shepherd, who is also a two-time USGA Champion, began her round with an eagle on the par-5, 1st, and Pancake carded three birdies in her opening nine holes. Pancake made the turn at 2-under-par, and Shepherd turned at 1-under, while Potter-Bobb posted an even-par, 36.
Playing in different groups, Potter-Bobb wasn’t aware how fellow competitors were playing, but her tremendous back nine ultimately won her the championship. Birdying holes 10, 14, 15, 16, and 18, Potter-Bobb carded a back nine, 33, for an 18-hole total of 3-under-par, 69.
“It’s always nice to win, especially with all these great golfers," Potter-Bobb said. "It was an outstanding field.”
Shepherd and Pancake finished tied for runner-up at 2-under-par, 70.
