Melton Grabs Early Win

May 2, 2016

Four-time Indiana PGA Player of the Year, Brett Melton, CC of Old Vincennes, is off to a solid start to the 2016 tournament season.  After finishing one shot back at the Indiana PGA Southern Open, Melton bounced back with a 5-under-par, 67 today at the Hawthorns GCC to defeat the field by one.

“I hit the ball really well today,” Melton said.  “When I got in trouble, I was able to recover.”

Melton’s round consisted of five birdies coming on holes 9, 11, 14, 16 and 18.

“I gave myself a lot of good looks today,” Melton said.  “My longest birdie conversion was a 10 footer on 18, so for the most part, my approach shots were really close.  I also made some necessary par saves.”

Melton spent a decent amount of time this winter participating in PGA Winter Championships in Florida.  He grabbed one win and kept himself physically and mentally loose heading into spring golf.

“I was fortunate enough to get down to Florida a few times this winter,” Melton said.  “I also had the opportunity to watch Adam Schenk practice and play at the club quite a bit.  Seeing him play so well is very motivating.  Anytime you have the chance to watch someone of that caliber hit balls and chip around, it elevates your own game.”

Rick Witt, Bridgewater GC, finished second after posting a 4-under-par, 68.
