Lewis Captures Boys State Title

Jul 16, 2014

Bloomington, Ind. –

UPDATE: The Final Stage of the Boys State Jr. Championship has been completed!

After a great week of golf, the #3 seed Thomas Lewis defeated #1 Alec Davis. Following 36 holes of stroke play, the two boys had to face two other opponents to reach the final in Bloomington on Friday. Alec Davis defeated Zach Schroeder 4&3, while Tyler White took Thomas Lewis to 19 holes before Lewis secured his place in the final with a par.

In the final, Lewis took Davis to 19 holes in one of the highest seeded finals in Boys State history. After 9 holes Davis was 1-up on Lewis, but after trouble on hole 16 Davis conceded off the green giving Lewis his first chance to lead all week. However, on hole 17 Lewis bogeyed and the two went all square heading into 18. Lewis had 20 ft for birdie, while Davis had 12 ft, and both ended up with a par to take the match to 19 holes. Lewis chipped up and had his birdie conceded, while Davis missed his 20ft birdie putt to extend the match, leaving Thomas Lewis as the 2014 Boys State Jr. Championship.

A field of 112 players set
out on Monday with hopes to make it to match play on Wednesday. After a rainy
Tuesday evening, the top 64 begin competition today in seeded play, which is
determined by their position on the summary board after their second round.

Alec Davis of Greencastle,
Ind. is seeded first with a two-day total of 2-under-par. Davis began the competition with
a birdie on hole one, the first of six birdies that day and part of his day
total of 5-under-par. Davis then began day two with an eagle on hole one, but posted a 75 to drop to 2-under-par, but to retain the lead.

Nicolas Osterburg of
Indianapolis, Ind. is seeded second with a two-day total of 1-under-par. Osterburg had
four birdies on Monday to shoot a 4-under-par, 68, but like Davis
bounced back and forth during his second round and posted a 75, to fall to 1-under-par, one shot off the lead.

Thomas Lewis of Carmel, Ind. is seeded third with
a two-day total of even par. Like Davis, Lewis began the competition with a
birdie on hole one, one of four birdies he carded that day to give him an even par finish.  Lewis maintained par throughout the second round, with the help of an
eagle on the par-5, 14th.
