Lazzara’s 68 Leads State Amateur

Jun 20, 2011

Experiencing what it is like to lead a championship event for the first time at the prestigious Indiana Amateur could seem pretty intimidating. But Tony Lazzara handled his 4-under-par 68 and top position over 155 fellow competitors with poise and confidence. “There are still three more rounds. It’s only the first day,” said Lazzara. “Anything can still happen. I’m going to try not to think about [having the lead] and just go out and play golf tomorrow.”

Just playing solid golf today at Otter Creek led to six birdies on his scorecard, including one at the 6th hole with a long putt from over the ridge. “I putted well and didn’t really get in too much trouble. When I did, I saved myself from a big number,” explained Lazzara.

Tied in second just behind him at 69 are Aaron Monson, Eric Skillman, Benjamin Engle and McCormick Clouser. Local favorite Tyler Duncan is next in sixth position with a 70.

Play continues Tuesday, and then the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties after 36 holes. The remaining competitors will return Wednesday and Thursday for 36 more holes of stroke play competition to determine the best amateur in the state.
