Former High School Teammates Lead at Mid-Am Team

Apr 12, 2015

Former High School teammates Wayne Denger (Wabash) and Blake Shelby (Zionsville) posted an impressive 7-under-par, 63 today during round one of the IGA Mid-Am Team Championship at Highland G & CC.  The duo’s best ball total gave them a one shot lead heading into tomorrow’s final round.

“We started playing golf together at Lebanon High School, so we know each other’s games well,” Shelby said.  “I made four birdies today and Wayne made three, so as a team we’re really happy with how we played.”

Denger and Shelby were bogey free today at Highland, carding seven birdies on holes 1, 3, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 16.

“We’re looking forward to the scramble format tomorrow, and like always, it will most likely come down to putting,” Denger said.

Defending Champions Todd Palmer (Fishers) and Curt Puckett (Farmland) proved they were once again a force to be reckoned with.  The duo posted a 6-under-par, 64 to finish one shot out of the lead.

“We played really well today,” Puckett said.  “We’ve been playing together since we were 18. We have very different games but we really complement each other.  Todd’s more consistent than I am, but on occasion I can have a little bit of fire power.”

If Palmer and Puckett grab the lead tomorrow, it will be their third victory in this event.
