First Round of Indiana Amateur Championship Suspended Due to Weather

Jun 17, 2019

Due to a two-hour rain delay on Monday afternoon, the first round of the 2019 Indiana Amateur Championship was suspended and will resume Tuesday morning before the second round begins.

The current leader in the clubhouse is Indiana University’s Mitchell Davis, Valparaiso. The rising sophomore for the Hoosiers carded a nearly flawless 7-under-par, 65 with seven birdies and no bogeys. All seven of Davis’ birdies came between holes five and 15.

“My mental game was the best part today,” Davis said. “There was a point I thought I could be 6 or 7-under-par through 10 holes, but I stayed calm and kept plotting away.”

The first round 65 gives Davis a two-shot lead after most players have finished round one. A group of five golfers sits two shots back in a tie for second at 5-under-par. Greenwood’s Noah Gillard fired a back nine 4-under-par, 32 en route to his 67.

While the weather held off all morning for the first wave of tee times, mother nature, paired with the already damp golf course, forced a two-hour rain delay. With roughly four holes left for the groups yet to finish the first round, the second round will begin at 9:00 a.m. with all tee times being pushed back one hour.  Round one will be completed beginning at 7:15 a.m.
