Cooks Wins Southern Open in Playoff

Apr 18, 2016

The 2012 Indiana PGA Southern Open Champion, Kenny Cook, grabbed his second victory in this event today at Belterra Resort and Casino.  Cook fired a 5-under-par, 66 this afternoon to finish in a tie for first with Sean Rowen of Greenwood.

With a stellar approach shot on the par-4, 1st, Cook made birdie to Rowen’s par to grab his first victory of the 2016 tournament season.

“I played solid today,” said Cook, the 2012 IGA John K. David Player of the Year.  “A highlight for me was definitely my up-and-down conversion on 12.  I chipped it to three feet and made the putt for par.”

Winning this event is meaningful to Cook, especially with how little golf he has been able to play so far this year.

“I haven’t had the opportunity to play much yet this spring or hit many golf balls,” Cook said.  “The weather was perfect today and it was really fun to play with Brett (Melton).  We battled back and forth all day and I feel like that kept me focused.  It feels great to get an early win this season.”

Rowen also got off to a tremendous start for the 2016 season.  His round of 66 was made possible by hitting all 18 greens.

“I don’t think I could have hit the ball any better,” said Rowen, a two-time IGA John K. David Player of the Year.

During the off season, Rowen maintained his strength and flexibility through workouts.  He was also fitted for new clubs by PGA Professional Chris Clemens.

“Chris got me fitted with some great equipment,” Rowen said.  “I worked out a bit this winter and luckily I am striking the ball really well right now.”

Finishing third was Brett Melton of Vincennes.  Melton posted a 4-under-par, 67.
