Carich Captures First Senior Open

Jun 6, 2017

David Carich, PGA Professional at Harbour Trees G.&B.C. captured the 2017 Indiana Senior Open Championship at Delaware C.C. in Muncie, marking the first win in this event for the soon to be 56-year-old. “I’ve had two runner-ups in the Senior Open since I turned 50,” said Carich “so it was nice to finally get a victory.”

Carich trailed first round leader Scott Martin by a shot along with Sam Till Jr and Mike Bell, however, Carich played in the group ahead of that threesome in the final round. Carich made back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 to stay a shot back of Till who made his own pair of birdies on 12 and 13 coming down the stretch. Till then ran into trouble with bogeys on three of his last four holes which allowed Carich to come away with a two-shot win after knocking down a testy four foot par putt at the last.

The quick, sloped greens of Delaware C.C. challenged players for two days and proved to be the key for Carich’s victory. “I’ve been striking the ball real well and this week I finally got my putter working, so that was the difference,” said Carich. “With these greens there’s only so many pin placements you can have and they were pretty fair even though they were pretty fast today with the wind.” Carich credits his newfound confidence to a new putter he recently put in play. “It’s made all the difference so far, so now it looks like the ball is going in.”

Till finished as the low amateur and tied for second overall with PGA Professional Bill Schumaker.
