Brian Maurer fired a 1-under par, 69 during the first round of the Indiana PGA Assistant Championship at Delaware Country Club to put himself in a tie for first. His day wasn’t over, however, as he then had to play another 18 holes as apart of a 36-hole day.
Maurer came out even stronger in the afternoon as he fired a 4-under-par, 66 to put himself four strokes ahead of the pack. Maurer said he hit it really well and was able to convert multiple birdie opportunities en route to his second round score.
The most impressive part about his round was that it came with no bogies. Maurer set himself up well heading into Tuesday’s final round, knowing that the top three finishers in the event qualify for the 42nd National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, November 15-18 at the Wanamaker Course in Port St. Luice, Fla.
After hours of rainfall throughout the day Monday and into Tuesday, the final round was cancelled due to unplayable conditions. That meant that the 36 hole scores were final and Maurer was the champion.
“It is really special, especially being my first year in the section,” Maurer said. “To come out here in my first year and win and be able to represent our section at the national championship means a lot.”
Along with Maurer, Craig Isabel and Eric Huther qualified for the PGA Assistant Championship with a 36-hole score of 1-under-par and even-par, respectively.
“Anytime you can get out of a regional or state level and go play for a national championship anywhere, is special,” Maurer said. “It is something that my family and I are really looking forward to.”
