Amy Thompson Defeats Number One Seed and Last Year’s Defending Champion

May 31, 2012

Amy Thompson, a junior who plays for the University of Indianapolis, shot an 80 yesterday and was seeded sixteenth. This morning, Thompson defeated the number one seed, Taylor Gohn, a junior from The University of Missouri, which qualified her for the quarterfinals, which took place this afternoon. Thompson, then, took on last year’s defending champion, Kristtini Cain, a recent graduate from Indiana University. Thompson and Cain were neck and neck throughout the day. On 17, an uphill par three, both Thompson and Cain hit the green. Cain putted first, leaving herself a tap in par, and Thompson sunk her 25-foot birdie putt to go one up heading into the 18th hole. Cain went on to birdie 18, while Thompson pared, which forced the group into sudden death playoff holes. Both Thompson and Cain pared number one, the first playoff hole. And on their 20th hole, number two, a tough par three, Thompson hit the green, while Cain missed pin high on the left. Thompson two –putted for par, and Cain failed to get up and down, bogeying the hole, and securing Thompson the victory. Thompson finished 1 up through 20 holes and advanced to the semi-finals, which will take place tomorrow morning. After her round this afternoon, Thompson said, “I just want to stay in it tomorrow. I need to put myself close and make birdie putts.” She will face Briana Midkiff, a freshman from The University of Iowa, tomorrow morning at 8:08 a.m. Teeing off right before them at 8:00 a.m. is Kristi Cardwell, a senior from The University of Iowa, and Megan Potee, a junior from Kansas University. The winners from each match will face the other immediately after their first matches are completed.
