Havill Continues Roll

Jun 29, 2015

Last week, Andrew Havill of Carmel made a tremendous comeback during the final round of the 115th Indiana Amateur Championship, narrowing a seven shot gap to just one, for a runner-up finish.  Today, Havill grabbed his first Indiana Golf win after posting a 4-under-par, 68 at the Indiana PGA Monticello Open at Tippecanoe CC, with proud dad Greg by his side caddying.

“I’m really happy for Andrew,” Greg said.  “I always knew he had the game to win one of these events, but he has struggled with his confidence.  I have reminded him to be patient and it is great to see it all come together.  I’m very proud.”

Havill carded six birdies today coming on holes 2, 4, 6, 10, 11 and 17.

“We made a wrong turn this morning and I ended up at the course ten minutes before my tee time,” said Havill, a rising junior at Indiana University.  “I didn’t get a chance to warm up so I felt a little bit rusty for my first few holes, but I managed to turn it around.  I gave myself a lot of birdie chances today and got to 4-under through 11 holes.”

Last year at the Monticello Open, Havill posted the same score of 68 but finished fifth behind Champion Jon Balyeat of Sycamore Hills GC.

“I’ve put myself in the same situation two years in a row shooting 68, but luckily this year the outcome worked in my favor,” Havill said.  “After last week, I had high expectations coming into this event.  I feel like my game is really starting to click and my misses are getting better.  I’m very excited that I was able to get my first win and I hope to keep my momentum up for the rest of the summer.”

Brett Melton of the Country Club of Old Vincennes and Brooks Snyder of West Lafayette finished in a tie for second at 3-under-par.
