Thompson Claims Number One Seed at IWGA Match Play Championship

May 29, 2013

After barely qualifying for last year’s IWGA Match Play, Wakarusa’s Amy Thompson medaled today with a 2-under-par 70 to take the number one seed at The Players Club in Muncie. Thompson made the most of her opportunity last year and advanced to the semi-finals. She hopes to use her number one seed to make it even further this year.

“Last year I struggled a lot during the qualifying round,” said Thompson, a rising senior at the University of Indianapolis. “This year I just focused on making as many birdies as I could and tomorrow I plan on having the same attitude.”

Thompson’s round consisted of four birdies coming on the par 4, 6th hole, the par 4, 8th hole, the par 4, 12th hole, and the par 4, 17th hole. Thompson also carded two bogeys on holes 13 and 18.

“Tomorrow I plan on just taking things one hole at a time,” Thompson said. “The good thing about match play is that if you make a big number you can simply move on rather than let it affect your round. I’ve come up just short the last couple of years so I’m excited to be in this position and see what happens.”

Thompson will face Ashtyn Brown of Ball State University in tomorrow’s match.

Sixteen players qualified for match play today including Kristi Cardwell, the 2012 Women’s Open Champion and Julie Carmichael, past IWGA State Amateur Champion and member of the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame.
