Stephens Takes a One Shot Lead at Senior Am

Aug 19, 2013

Carmel’s Mike Cline and defending
Champion, Terry Werner were the early co-leaders in the clubhouse this
afternoon after posting 3-under-par 69s at the IGA Senior Amateur Championship
held at Anderson CC. With just a few
groups remaining on the course, Indianapolis’ Bob Stephens shook things up
after posting a 4-under-par 68 to take a one shot lead heading into the final
round tomorrow.

“I bogeyed my last two holes today
and wasn’t thrilled about my finish, but overall I played well,” Stephens
said. “I putted very well today and have
been playing very solidly this past month.”

Stephens’ round consisted of an
impressive eight birdies today, including five in a row coming on holes 7, 8,
9, 10, and 11.

“It would mean a lot to me to win,”
Stephens said. “There are so many good
players in Indiana and to beat a field like this would be a great
accomplishment.”

There’s currently a four way tie for fourth including Dave Williamson of Crawfordsville, Mike Bell of Indianapolis, Jerry McMullen of Indianapolis, and Ron Carter of Monticello.

Franklin’s Jim Anthony is in the lead for the
Super Senior Amateurs after firing an impressive 3-under-par 69 today.

“I drove the ball well and never got into any real trouble,” Anthony said.   “I made some nice birdie putts and I only had one bogey.  I hope to continue to drive the ball well tomorrow and let the rest take care of itself.”

The Super Senior Division includes players ages 65 and older.
