Stephens & Hillman Champs Again

May 19, 2012

Apparently, Bob Stephens was tired of winning by himself.  The amateur from Indianapolis won his second IGA event in the month of May as he and partner Joe Hillman cruised to a 4-shot victory in the IGA Four Ball.  The Legends GC 7,000 yard layout was no match for the duo as they took advantage of two days of perfect conditions.  The two made a total of 18 birdies over the course of the 36-hole event.  Their two round total of 16-under par ties the best score since the event switched to a best ball format in 2010.

It was a solid and dominating performance from start to finish.  The team began the event by shooting a 6-under par 30 on the front nine on Friday, and finished with a 1st round 63, which left them 3 shots clear of their next closest competitors.  With that performance on Friday, the second round seemed to be a matter of how large would the margin be, rather than would they hang on.  They left no doubt with another impressive front nine.  They shot a 4-under par 32, which included a double bogey on 4th hole.  They finished with a final round 65 and a second victory in the event.  The team won the Four Ball in 2003, and Stephens lost in a playoff last year, but with a different partner.  The win marks an amazing month for Stephens.  He finished as the low amateur in the Senior Open at South Bend CC and won the IGA McDonalds Series event at Otter Creek last Sunday.

The team of Brian Harris and Derek Moore finished second after firing a second round 64.  They beat out the teams of Jeff Smith/Dave Bean, Skip Runnels/Randy Nichols, Anthony Arthur/Ryan Myers, and Brooks Snyder/Brent Hofman who all tied for 3rd at 12-under par.
