Two champions were crowned Tuesday as the Indiana Golf Association concluded the 2026 Senior and Super Senior Amateur Championships at Highland Golf & Country Club. Following two days of championship golf, Troy Schreiber claimed the Senior Amateur Championship while Jerry McMullen emerged victorious in a dramatic six-hole playoff to win the Super Senior Amateur Championship.
The championships were contested simultaneously over two days, with Senior and Super Senior competitors playing in separate divisions. More than four inches of rain over the weekend forced Monday’s opening round to begin at 1 p.m., but Highland Golf & Country Club’s staff delivered outstanding course conditions that, paired with beautiful weather, created an excellent championship test.
Senior Amateur Championship
Troy Schreiber entered the final round with a one-shot lead after opening the championship with a 3-under-par 69. Knowing several accomplished players were within striking distance, Schreiber focused on keeping the ball in play rather than chasing birdies.
“I hit it well yesterday—fairways and greens,” Schreiber said. “I wanted to do the same thing today. Keep it in play, avoid the big numbers and keep everything in front of me.”
Schreiber carded a final-round 1-over 71 to finish at even-par 140, one stroke ahead of Joe Mahurin, who posted the low round of the day among the leaders with a 1-under 69 to finish at 141. Michael Williams placed third at 2-over, while Dave Turpin finished fourth at 3-over.
Despite leading throughout the championship, Schreiber resisted checking the leaderboard until the final hole.
“I didn’t until I got to the 18th fairway,” he said. “Dave Turpin asked if I wanted to know where I stood. I said, ‘I think I do.'”
Schreiber closed out the championship to earn one of Indiana’s premier senior amateur titles.
“Anytime you get a win, it’s special,” Schreiber said. “But to win the Indiana Senior Amateur, it’s very special.”
Super Senior Amateur Championship
If the Senior Championship rewarded consistency, the Super Senior Championship delivered plenty of drama.
Defending champion Terry Werner began the day with a two-shot advantage, but an opening-nine 2-over-par round allowed the field to tighten. Carmel’s Mike Klein briefly moved into a share of the lead before a bogey on the sixth hole of his second nine dropped him back.
Werner appeared to regain control with a birdie on the sixth hole, stretching his lead back to two shots, but consecutive bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes brought Jerry McMullen even heading to the final hole.
Both players made par on the 18th, sending the championship into a playoff.
Neither competitor could separate themselves over the first five extra holes before 76-year-old McMullen finally secured the victory on the sixth playoff hole, capturing his fourth Indiana Golf Super Senior Amateur Championship.
“As I get older, it’s really a big deal,” McMullen said. “I’ve been playing Indiana Golf championships for 25 or 30 years, and the last few years you’re just trying to keep it going. To win one of these now means even more than it did a long time ago.”
Werner, a five-time Indiana Senior Amateur Champion and the defending Super Senior champion, finished runner-up after another impressive championship performance. John Browder fired a final-round 69 to finish tied for third alongside Mike Klein, while Jeff Parsons placed fifth.
Indiana Golf extends its sincere appreciation to Highland Golf & Country Club, its members, staff and volunteers for hosting both championships. Despite significant rainfall leading into the event, the course was presented in outstanding condition and provided a fitting test for two of Indiana Golf’s premier senior amateur championships.
