Runnels Mid Am Champion

Aug 13, 2010

With a 30 on the back nine and a birdie at the 18th, Skip Runnels of Richmond edged out Terry Werner of Dyer for the Mid Am Championship victory. “The course fits the way I play golf better than a lot of courses,” explained Runnels, who believes the shorter and tighter Tippecanoe Lake CC allows him to stay competitive with the younger players who hit the ball much further.

At the turn, Werner, who led after the first round, and Todd Palmer of Fishers shared the lead at 7-under-par. Runnels was only at 2-under for the tournament but was coming off a great birdie at the 9th hole. “Maybe that jump started things for me. Things just seemed to come together after that,” said Runnels. He made four consecutive birdies to start the back side, and ended up making two more before getting to the final tee. He and Werner both knew they were tied but were unaware Palmer had doubled his last hole to drop to third place. Both hit drives into the fairway and then hit the green, but Runnels hit his approach to 6 feet while Werner left himself 25 feet. “I had a 6-foot right to left putt, just like you want in that situation,” he said.

This is Runnel’s second Mid Am win and first victory at this course.
