Indianapolis’ Julia Potter was one of only three players to
better par today at Tippecanoe CC during the second round of the IWGA State
Amateur Championship. With birdies on
holes one, 11, and 13 Potter posted a 1-under-par, 71 and heads to the final
round with a three shot lead over Richmond’s Trish Witherby.
“I definitely played more consistently today,” Potter said. “I knew how important it was to hit greens and
make pars. Yesterday I struggled a
little bit on the par-3s, bogeying three out of four. Today, I was able to make pars on all four
and I think my score reflected that.”
Potter is a two-time Women’s Am Champion (’07, ’08) and
looks for her third victory this week at Tippecanoe. If Potter were able to win for a third time,
she would be one of only eight women in the state of Indiana to accomplish this
feat.
“Winning this tournament would mean a great deal to me,”
Potter said. “To be able to win for a
third time after just recently getting my amateur status back would be a great
accomplishment.”
Growing up, Potter always looked forward to participating in
the Women’s Am, and calls it the pinnacle of Indiana Women’s events.
“When I participated in the USGA Mid-Am last year, I said I
was from Indiana even though I was living in Texas at the time,” Potter
said. “I’m really proud to be from
Indiana and I consider this to be the pinnacle of IWGA events. Three shots isn’t a lot when it comes to the
final round of the Women’s Am and I know I will have to continue to play
consistently tomorrow. This is a
tremendous field and I look at tomorrow as me against the rest of the
Championship Flight. Anything can
happen.”
This year’s Indiana PGA Women’s Open Champion Kelly Grassel of
Chesterton and Madison’s Amanda Detmer are currently tied for third at
5-over-par.
After today, the field was divided into seven flights. The top twenty players comprise the Championship Flight.
