Potter Hungry for Open Title

Jul 1, 2015

The Indiana PGA Women’s Open is one thing Julia Potter is missing from her golf resume.  In 2007, Potter won her first Indiana Amateur Championship.  She repeated in ’08 and grabbed her third title last summer.  In ‘09, Potter won the IWGA Match Play Championship and in 2013 she became a USGA Champion after winning the Women’s Mid-Am.

Potter fired an opening round of 2-under-par, 68 today at Delaware CC and has a one shot lead heading into the final round of the Women’s Open.

“Since I started playing Indiana women’s golf tournaments, this is the only event I have yet to win,” said Potter of Indianapolis.  “Since 2009, I have been trying to win the Open.  If I was able to do so, I feel like my career would feel complete as an Indiana Golfer.  It would really mean a lot to me.”

Potter grew up playing on the Indiana Junior Golf Tour and has always been a player to watch.  She learned the game backwards, focusing on short game before ever learning about the full swing.  Her chipping and putting tend to give her an edge in women’s events.

“Today came down to my putting, like it does in most events,” Potter said.  “I also never really got in trouble.  I hit my tee shots straight and kept the ball in play.”

Potter will participate in the US Women’s Amateur Championship as well as the US Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship this fall.

“I take Indiana Golf tournaments just as seriously as national events,” Potter said.  “I am very passionate about Indiana Women’s Golf.  The events are great to play in and being from Indiana, they have always been very important to me.”

Kayla Katterhenry of Newburgh and Brittany Kelly of Fishers are currently tied for second and head to the final round just one shot back at 1-under-par.

“I have been runner-up in two IWGA events and I finished third in the Open last year,” Katterhenry said.  “It would mean a lot to me to win this event because I am playing with both amateurs and professionals of all ages.”

Tee times will begin tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.
