Jul 27, 2012

Chad Phillips, Mitchell became the 87th Indiana
Boys State Junior Champion defeating Mark Whipple, Avon 6&4 at Kampen GC in
West Lafayette. After Whipple won the sixth hole to cut the Phillips lead to
1up, Phillips gained control of the Championship Match winning four of the next
five to take a commanding 5up lead that he never relinquished. “Winning number
10 felt pretty good” said Phillips when asked at what point he thought he had
the Championship in his grasp, “at that point I was running on adrenaline.”
With Phillips dormie on the 14th tee, Whipple his is tee shot left
into the hazard and conceded the match after failing to make long bogey
attempt.
The win put Phillips name on the most decorated past champions list in Indiana
Junior Golf, which wasn’t lost on him after the match. “It’s going to be great
seeing it (his name) up there every year and knowing it can’t be taken off”
said Phillips.
Phillips road to the Championship included finishing stroke play at 77-76-153 and
earning the 18th seed in match play. Once into match play Phillips
only saw the 18th hole once and didn’t trail until his semifinal match
against Jack Musgrave, Chesterton that he won in 19 holes. Phillips stood on
the final hole trailing by one but was able to save par with a clutch four foot
putt to extend the match into extra holes. He went on to birdie the 19th
hole and advance to the Championship.
Phillips, a Senior to be at Mitchell High School, is also a caddie at the Pete
Dye Course at French Lick and pursuing an Evans Scholarship.
