Palmer Looks for Second Mid-Am Title

Aug 13, 2015

Todd Palmer of Fishers carded a pair of 33s this afternoon at Tippecanoe Lake CC and leads by one after the opening round of the IGA Mid-Amateur Championship.  Palmer posted a 4-under-par, 66 across the 5937 yard layout and looks for his second Mid-Am title.

“I love this course,” said the 2007 Mid-Am Champion.  “It sets up perfectly for me.  I hit 16 greens and made five birdies.”

Palmer carded birdies on holes 7, 8, 12, 15 and 17.  His lone bogey of the day came on the par-4, 16th.

Although Palmer has the lead heading to the final round, the leaderboard remains crowded.  12 players posted rounds of even-par or better this afternoon, leaving the title up for grabs.

Brett Widner of Avon posted a 3-under-par, 67 today after an opening triple on the par-5, 1st.  He looks for a three-peat with Mid-Am wins coming in ’13 and ’14.

“All I could do was laugh off the 8,” Widner said.  “I came back and birdied holes 3 and 4 and then I felt like I was right back in it.  I like the position I am in try not to think about the outcome.  If I get off to a good start tomorrow, I know I can compete out here.”

Dave Williamson of Crawfordsville posted 68 today and says the course sets up well for the senior amateurs participating.

“For us short and straight hitters, Tippecanoe Lake is perfect.  I’m able to hit driver on every hole out here and have a lot of wedges into greens.”

Brooks Synder of Lafayette and Lee Crannell of Carmel are also tied for third at 2-under-par.

Tee times begin tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
