National Win for Griffing

Jan 19, 2010

Quinn Griffing of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Roy Vucinich of Moon Township, Pa.,
were the big winners Jan. 14, in the 26th annual PGA Senior Stroke Play
Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Griffing, 51, co-owner and PGA head professional of the Donald Ross Golf
Club, was the overall low scorer for age groups 50-54 and 55-59, finishing with
a five under par 67 on the Ryder Course for a 54-hole total of 205.

Vucinich, 62, a PGA Life Member and professional emeritus at Allegheny
Country Club in Sewickley, Pa., birdied the first four holes on the back nine of
the Wanamaker Course enroute to a 9-under-par 63. At 200, he was the top
finisher by seven strokes for players 60 years and older.

It was Griffing’s first victory in the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Winter
Championships, the fourth for Vucinich. The latter won for age groups 50-59 in
1999; was the senior partner for the winning Senior-Junior team in 2003 and last
year claimed the Quarter Century Club Championship for age groups 49-under
through 60-64.

Griffing and Vucinich received $1,500 apiece for their overall titles. The
balance of the $82,000 purse was distributed among nine age groups. Griffing
received an additional $2,500 for ages 50-54, Vucinich another $2,000 for the
60-64 age group.

The Senior Stroke Play Championship is the second of six tournaments included
in the Winter Championships. The Senior-Junior Championship will be conducted
Jan. 18-21, on the Wanamaker and Ryder Courses.

Griffing collected 16 birdies and five bogeys in 54 holes, opening with a
pair of 69s on the Ryder and Wanamaker Courses in the first two rounds.

“I putted well, had good speed on the greens, and managed my game well,” said
Griffing, who was the Indiana PGA Senior Player of the Year the last two
years.

Vucinich eagled the par-5 first hole of the final round and also had 17
birdies and three bogeys, including a three-putt bogey at the 15th green. He
posted a 68 in the opening round on the Wanamaker Course, followed by a 69 on
the Ryder Course.

“It’s a nice win because there are a lot of good players in the field,” said
Vucinich of 243 entries 50 years and older. “I’ve hit the ball well for the last
two weeks.”

A week earlier, Vucinich turned in a 71 and 69 on the Ryder Course and tied
for sixth in his age group at the Quarter Century Championship.
