Mike Lee Takes Northern Open Title

Jun 15, 2017

Amateur Mike Lee captured the 2017 Indiana PGA Northern Open sponsored by Mobile Pro Shop and Sterling Cut Glass after firing a 4-under-par round of 66 at Morris Park C.C. in South Bend.

Lee carded five birdies on the round against a lone bogey, including a strong finish down the stretch to shoot 3-under 32 on the back nine. “I was getting my tee shots in a good position, which allowed me to be aggressive,” Lee said of the key to his round. The par-70 layout at Morris Park includes just two par-5’s, which happened to be the only place Lee really had issues. “I got in trouble twice today, on both par fives,” said Lee of those struggles. “It was frustrating because it took me out of position to have a good birdie chance.”

Despite those holes, Lee’s round was good enough to best the field by two-shots and become the 21-year-olds first Indiana Golf win since he was a junior in 2012. “It feels great to get a win against a field with such great players,” commented Lee. “This being my first Indiana Golf win since junior golf really gives me the confidence I need going forward that I can compete at this level.”

Indiana PGA Professional Tim Holt finished runner-up with a 2-under-par 68 and also took low professional honors.
