Melton Wins Rain Plagued Southern Open

Sep 2, 2014

Despite wet conditions, 64 was the number to beat at the
Indiana PGA Southern Open. 2013 PGA
Player of the Year, Brett Melton posted the impressive 6-under total over the
difficult Donald Ross layout for his third victory this year and a chance for
another Player of the Year title.

“Everything finally clicked for me,” said Melton of the
Country Club of Old Vincennes. “These
greens are very difficult, but I missed in the right spots and made putts when
I needed to.”

This is Melton’s third win this season, with previous wins
coming at the first and second Tournament Series events at Prairie View GC and Rock
Hollow GC. His round consisted of seven
birdies coming on holes 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 16, and 17. His lone bogey of the day came on the par-3,
13th when he misclubbed.

“I misjudged the yardage and hit my tee shot over the
green,” Melton said. “Other than that I
didn’t make many errors. My goal was to
win Player of the Year again this year and I think I have put myself in a very
good position. I gained momentum with my
two wins early in the season and even though I didn’t play well at the club
pro, I’m proud of my overall play this year.”

A morning and afternoon rain delay postponed play yesterday,
forcing two players to complete their rounds early this morning. Tim Holt and Mike Wassmer finished their last
few holes at 7:30 a.m., and Holt posted a 4-under-par, 66 to finish in a tie
for second with John Hoover of Wood Wind GC.

Sean Rowen carded a 2-under-par, 68 to finish fourth.
