Jul 8, 2019

The IGA, Super Senior and Senior Match Play qualifying rounds concluded today at Old Oakland Golf Club in Indianapolis. After one round of stroke play, 16 Super Senior and Senior competitors advanced to the bracket portion of the championship and 32 IGA competitors advanced to bracket play.

Skip Runnels, Richmond, led the way in the Super Senior division carding a 1-over, 73, to claim the top seed going into the match play bracket. Runnels’ round included two birdies and three bogeys which earned him the top spot by one shot over Dwight Seals.

Seals, Corydon, battled back from a bogey-bogey start to shoot a 2-over, 74, which included a 1-under, 35, on the back nine at Old Oakland.

Three players finished in a tie for 16th at 9-over after the stroke play qualifier forcing a three-way playoff for the final match play spot. Tim Kuzma defeated Pete Holm and Randall Christie in a playoff to secure the 16 seed and will face Runnels in the first round of match play.

The Senior division was led by Terry Warner, Dyer, who turned in a spotless scorecard in the qualifying round with two birdies and 16 pars en route to a 2-under, 70. Old Oakland's own Steve Sterrett carded the second best round in the senior division firing a 1-under, 71, with three birdies and two bogeys.

Doug Meade, Carmel, had the shot of the day with a hole-in-one at the par 3, 8th hole. Meade hit a knockdown 7-iron from 164 yards holing out as part of his 3-over, 75. Meade finished in a tie for ninth in the stroke play qualifier and moved on to the match play portion of the championship.

A playoff was needed to fill out the 16-player bracket in the Senior division as four players competed for two spots in bracket play. Dave Vlasic and Gordie Rees claimed the two spots up for grabs and advanced to match play.

Brett Widner led the way in the Match Play Championship division with a 6-under, 66. Widner, Avon, led the field with eight birdies and just two bogeys earning the top seed by three strokes. Brandon Tereshko, Avon, carded a round of 3-under, 69 earning the second seed behind Widner.

Once again, three players at 9-over, 81, squared off in a playoff for the final spot in match play. Adam Keown, Charleston, defeated Jack Kreman and Michael Schaefer in a sudden-death playoff to round out the 32-player match play bracket.
