Mahurin and Scheibert Take Home IGA, IGA Senior Tournament of Champions Titles

Sep 23, 2019

Heading into the final round of the IGA Tournament of Champions at Old Oakland Golf Club, Joe Mahurin of Noblesville had a five-shot lead after posting an opening round score of 2-under-par, 70.

After nine holes today Mahurin’s lead was six, and as the day progressed, he proved unwavering.

“Conditions were tough the last couple of days,” Mahurin said.  “It was pretty windy out there, but I hit the ball solid and I putted well.  I played consistent.”

Mahurin has had a successful IGA career with two IGA Mid-Am Team Championship titles to his credit (’12, ’18), an IGA Tournament Series Championship, (’18) and an Indiana Amateur Championship runner-up finish (’08) to name a few.  This is his first IGA Tournament of Champions title, an event where state-wide club champions come together to compete.

“Every tournament win is an important win,” Mahurin said.  “I’ve finished in the top-five in this event several times, so it feels nice to finally get the win.”

In the senior division, Craig Scheibert, Carmel, posted a 4-under-par, 68 today to win the tournament by four shots over Steve Sterrett, Indianapolis.

“I bogeyed number 10, after hitting it in the bunker,” Scheibert said.  “Then I made four birdies and gave myself a chance.”

Scheibert is no stranger to playing well at Old Oakland, after recently winning the IGA Senior Match Play Championship earlier this year.

“I’m excited to have won today and to have a lifetime exemption into this event from this point forward.”
