This August, PGA Junior League Teams Kokomo and Prestwick competed at their City Championships with the hopes of advancing to Regionals.  After defeating Team Hamilton County East in a tie breaker and Team Chesterton 8-4 at Swan Lake Resort, Team Kokomo captured the PGA JLG North Indiana Championship. Two weeks later, Team Prestwick came away PGA JLG South Indiana Champions at Deer Creek GC with 11.5-.5 victories over Teams Indy One and Bloomington.

In late September, Teams Kokomo and Prestwick competed once again and on a bigger stage.  In order to win the Regional Championship, the Indiana teams had to not only knock out Grand Blanc, Columbus, but also one another.  The matches were contested at Prestwick CC, and hometown favorite Team Prestwick finished on top with a perfect 3-0 record.  The Team advanced to the PGA JLG Championship at TPC Sugarloaf in Atlanta, Ga., which was held October 24-26.

“The kids, families and coaches were so excited to have the opportunity to compete at the highest level,” said Amy Nickol, Assistant Coach of Team Prestwick.  “In between all the tournaments and matches every player practiced.  This group of kids has been able to manage their golf and schoolwork since beginning of August and their work ethic is admirable.”

On Friday October 24, Team Indiana (Prestwick) defeated Team Texas during round one of Nationals and headed to day two as one of only three teams that were undefeated.  Their winning streak continued with their second match of the tournament, knocking out Team Iowa.  Saturday afternoon, they faced last year’s Runner-Up Team California and their efforts just fell short.

However, their journey did not end there.  On Sunday, they had the opportunity to compete for third place.  They battled Team Tennessee and came out on top claiming third for their home state.

“The kids played well all year and continued all the way through the National Championship,” said Ben Weaver, Coach of Team Prestwick.  “We knew if the kids played relaxed and had fun, then they could play with anybody in the country.  Hats off to the PGA Jr League, PGA and TPC Sugarloaf staffs for all they did to make this event so special for the kids.”
