Indiana Golf Association Names Senior Player of the Year Award After Jerry Nelson

Feb 11, 2021

The Indiana Golf Association recently unanimously voted to name the Senior Player of the Year Award in honor of Indiana Golf Hall of Fame member Jerry Nelson.

Jerry Nelson’s impact on the IGA has been tremendous throughout the years.  Nelson was an accomplished player with several titles to his credit including: a U.S. Senior Amateur Runner-up finish (’93), a two-time IGA John K. David Player of the Year recipient (’86, ’93), a Wagoner Award recipient (’93), a three-time Senior Open Champion (’88, ’89, ’96) and 12 IGA tournament victories.

In addition to his playing career, Nelson also served as the President of the IGA.

“As a leader, he was well respected by everyone who knew him.  And as a player, he always had a smile and a kind word for fellow competitors,” said Spider Miller, 2000 Indiana Golf Hall of Fame inductee.

“His playing record, volunteer service to the organization, and lifetime of friendships are unmatched in Indiana Golf history,” added Kent Frandsen, 1990 Indiana Golf Hall of Fame inductee.

The IGA Player of the Year Award is named after John K. David and the IWGA Player of the Year Award recognizes Alice O’Neal Dye.  We are thrilled to honor Jerry Nelson in this same regard, with the addition of the IGA Senior Jerry Nelson Player of the Year Award.
