Columbus’s Tobi Herron saw herself three down during today’s Semi-Final Match at Highland G & CC, but came back late in the round to defeat Kayla Katterhenry of Newburgh. Herron won holes 15 through 18 to finish the match 1-up and advance to the finals where she faced Cherise Otter of Bloomington.
“I sunk a 50 foot birdie putt on 16 and at that point I thought I had a chance to make a comeback,” Herron said. “All day my goal was to get to 18. I kept thinking if I can just get to 18 then maybe I can win this match.”
Herron made it to 18 and won her match against Katterhenry with a two-putt par. In the final match, Herron faced 18 year-old Otter, a rising Senior at Bloomington South. Herron made birdie on the par-3, 4th to go 1-up, and from that point forward she never relinquished her lead.
“I hit the ball really solid this afternoon,” Herron said. “This is my first time playing in the IWGA Match Play Championship and it feels great to start off the season with a win.”
Herron’s goal for 2015 is to make the USGA Women’s Team Championship, and this win gives her a good look at that opportunity.
“I would love to play in the Team Championship later this year,” Herron said. “I am unable to play in the Women’s Am and Open, but am looking forward to the IWGA Championship this August.”
