For the second consecutive year, Tucker Guisewite of the Woodstock Club captured the Indiana Assistant PGA Professional Championship sponsored by National Car Rental. Guisewite opened with a round of 2-over-par 72 on the par-70 layout at Highland G.&C.C., but followed that with a 5-under 65 in round two and capped it with a 1-under 69 in the final round for a two-shot win.
“I came into this tournament not playing that much so I kind of found something in the first round,” said Guisewite. “Really, the first round was a good round but the score didn’t show it and then in the second round I got hot on the back nine.” When asked about what he found, Guisewite said it was both mental and physical. “More confidence off the tee and just rolling the ball over my mark a lot more consistently on the green.”
Despite the strong second round, Guisewite opened the final round trailing Michael Asbell of Woodland C.C. by a single shot. Asbell, however, struggled a bit and by the end of the 4th-hole, Guisewite had a lead that he would never relinquish.
Although he was the defending champion, Guisewite was playing for something he wasn’t playing for last year, a trip to the national PGA Assistant Professional Championship. The event serves as a championship for the Indiana PGA as well as a qualifier for the national championship and Guisewite, despite winning the Section event, wasn’t registered for the national. When asked if that was on his mind, Guisewite was quick to answer. “Absolutely. I’m excited to go down there and represent the Indiana Section so I’m looking forward to it,” he said about heading to the National Championship at the Wanamaker Course at PGA National Resort in Port Saint Lucie, Florida later this year.
