Final Four Set for Senior Match Play

Aug 28, 2014

The Senior Amateurs fought hard today at Hillview CC during
rounds one and two of the Match Play Championship, taking several matches to
extra holes. The final four players won
both their morning and afternoon matches and will advance to the quarter
finals.

Indianapolis’ Mike Bell and Gordie Rees of Albany, Ind. faced
off this morning, and their match extended to 20 holes. It took a chip-in eagle to determine a winner,
and Rees came out on top.

Franklin’s Chuck Wenning battled Defending Champion Dave
Vlasic of Valparaiso and for most of the match held a slim lead. Finally, on the 23rd hole, Wenning
made par to Vlasic’s bogey and advanced to the round of eight. Wenning’s luck ran out this afternoon, and
was knocked out by John Parker of Velpen 2 & 1.

Fort Wayne’s Sam Till Jr. defeated Indianapolis’ Bob
Stephens this morning 2 & 1, but his afternoon match proved more
difficult. Till faced Dyer’s Terry
Werner, and once again it took 23 holes to determine a winner, with Till
advancing to tomorrow’s match.

Monticello’s Ron Carter will join Rees, Parker, and Till
tomorrow in the final four after defeating Carmel’s Steve Coyne 1-up and Lebanon’s
Kent Frandsen 3 & 2.

Till is the only player who has won this event in the past,
with a victory in ’12.

In the Super Senior Division, only two players remain. Medalist Greg McCall of Indianapolis looks
for a win at the first ever Super Senior Match Play Championship. McCall knocked out Chuck Welter of Valparaiso
during the round of 8 in in 20 holes. He
went on to defeat Jim Anthony of Franklin in 19 holes this afternoon. McCall will face Monterey’s George Ramsey in
the finals tomorrow.
