Eric Steger is our 105th Indiana Open Champion with a Three Shot Victory

Jul 15, 2020

The final round of the 105th Real Mechanical Indiana Open Championship at Rock Hollow Golf Club was a battle to say the least.  Heading to day three of the 54-hole event, Shane Bryant, Williamsport, had a two-shot lead over Eric Steger, Westfield, and Scott Pieri, Fort Wayne, at 10-under-par.  As the day progressed, several players in the field were in contention, but it was Steger who came out on top – winning the event by three shots.

“I felt nervous heading to hole 8 after grabbing a share of the lead,” said 2010 Indiana Amateur Champion, Eric Steger.  “I tried to remind myself that I had a lot of golf left and I tried to take my focus off of my score.”

Timothy Wiseman, Corydon, also made a run at today’s title – grabbing his first share of the lead today after three birdies in his opening seven holes.  He posted a tournament total of 10-under-par, 206, which was enough for a runner-up finish.

Playing one group ahead, Matthew Meneghetti, Schererville, also made his run at the championship.  He found himself with the lead on his own after back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11.  He maintained this solo lead until the par-4, 13th where Steger made birdie and grabbed a share of the lead for the second time today.  Meneghetti went on to make bogey on the par-3, 14th, to trail by one – and was never able to catch Steger again.

36-hole leader Bryant also put up a good fight today at Rock Hollow.  He was in the mix all day until making a double bogey on the par-3, 14th.  He finished the tournament tied for fourth at 7-under-par.

In true champion fashion, Steger converted his 25 foot birdie putt on 18 for the win and a tournament total of 13-under-par, 203.  Heading into today’s final round, Steger hoped to join his dad in the history books and win his first Indiana Open Championship.  Today, he joins father Scott Steger, a 1980 champion, and they become the first father-son duo to ever win this event.

“Last night I started thinking about how cool it would be to have a State Am and a State Open win,” said Steger.  “It’s super cool to be able to say that the Steger boys are the only father-son combo to win them both.  I’m super proud of that.”

It was a tremendous week at Rock Hollow Golf Club.  Thank you to everyone who made this week possible. And a big thank you to Real Mechanical Contractors for sponsoring the 105th Indiana Open Championship!
