Greenwood’s Erica Shepherd wins her first IWGA event at the
age of 13. Shepherd posted a two-day total
of 4-under-par, 140 at Otter Creek GC to defeat Madison’s Amanda Detmer by one
stroke in the first annual IWGA Indiana Golf Championship.
“I’ve just been hitting the ball really well,” Shepherd
said. “I made an eagle on the par-5, 14th
which definitely helped my overall score today.
I also hit 17 greens. It was a
great day and I am proud of the way I played.”
Shepherd recently participated in the USGA Girl’s Junior
Championship and won the Indiana Junior Masters Tour Championship last week.
“This win is very special to me,” Shepherd said. “There were so many great players in the
field this week and it feels awesome to know I can compete at this level.”
Hometown favorite Tobi Herron won the Mid-Amateur Division
after posting a two-day total of 3-under-par, 142 and defeating Julia Potter of
Indianapolis in a playoff.
“I played well yesterday and to be honest I hit some quality
iron shots today, but had some bad short game moments,” Herron said. “It’s always good to get out there and play
competitively and overall I played really well.”
Herron is a three-time Mid-Amateur Champion and adds a
Mid-Am Division win to her list of accomplishments in this new IWGA event.
“I see this event as a building block for the USGA Mid-Am
coming up next month,” Herron said. “I
am doing some great things with my swing and just need to work on my short
game. I feel good about how I am
playing.”
Indianapolis’ Julie Carmichael was the Senior Champion after
two days of solid play at Otter Creek.
Carmichael posted a 9-over-par, 151 for an eight shot victory over Nina
Whalen of Indianapolis.
“I played really well during round one,” Carmichael
said. “Today didn’t go as well as I had
hoped, but a win gives me some confidence heading to the USGA Team Championship
with my partner Tobi Herron.”
Carmichael is an Indiana Amateur Champion (’87), an Indiana
PGA Women’s Open Champion (’00), and a four time Indiana Mid-Amateur Champion.
