Dynamic Duo of Runnels and Nichols Capture 2nd IGA Senior Team

Jun 7, 2012

Franklin, Ind. – Skip Runnels and Randy Nichols haven’t earned the reputation as one of best playing duos in the state without cause.  In the final round of the IGA Senior Team Championship at Hillview Country Club, they kept their reputation intact.

Teeing off in the final group with first round leaders Ted Smith and Tim Miller, Runnels and Nichols got off to a fast start with two opening birdies.  As the round progressed, Runnels and Nichols kept solid control of their lead.

“We knew we were going to have to play well to catch these guys, and our eagle on 7 got things jump started,” said Runnels.  On the par 5 7th hole, Runnels hit the green in two, and made a 15 foot downhill for eagle while Smith and Miller had to settle for par.

With four holes to play, Smith and Miller snuck in a birdie on 15 to get just one shot behind Runnels and Nichols. Both teams made birdie on 16, and on 17 green, it seemed as if Smith and Miller were going to tie things up. Tim Miller had a four foot putt for birdie, while Runnels and Nichols had already holed out with par. It was a breaking, side-hill putt, and Miller missed it on the low side, keeping them one shot behind with one hole to play. The par 5, 18th, looked easy when watching this foursome, as three out of four men birdied the hole, including both Runnels and Nichols.

“We didn’t make one bogey in two days,” said Runnels.  Our strength is staying in the hole. We never left each other hanging.” With a final round 62, Runnels and Nichols continue to be forced to be reckoned with during team events.
