Crowded Leaderboard at Indy Open

May 18, 2015

68 was the score to beat today during the first round of the Indianapolis Open at Woodland CC.  Chad Ayres, Hillcrest G & CC, Nathan Cunningham Carmel, Ivan Foster, Bridgewater GC, and Mike O’Toole, Riverside Golf Academy, currently share the lead at 4-under-par.

Woodland is in excellent shape, which all leaders agreed on.

“The greens were really good today,” Foster said.  “I putted really well today, which saved me.  I plan on playing smart tomorrow, even if that means going for centers of greens, because my putting feels really on at the moment.”

For Ayres and O’Toole, their ball striking was what contributed to their low rounds.

“I drove the ball really well,” O’Toole said.  “I hit a lot of fairways and greens and when I had a wedge in my hands, I hit it pretty close.”

Ayres did not miss a single fairway today.

“I hit the ball really well today.  Everything clicked and I hope to hit the ball the same way tomorrow,” Ayres said.

High school junior Nathan Cunningham felt like the course really fit his game distance-wise.

“I struck the ball well and gave myself good looks at birdie,” Cunningham said.  “This course is the perfect distance for me and this whole event is a great learning experience.  I’m going to go into tomorrow with the same attitude and just have fun.”

Keegan McKinney, Avon, David Moore, Carmel, and Brett Melton, CC of Old Vincennes are currently tied for second at 3-under-par.
