Crowded Leaderboard After Opening Round of the 97th Women’s Amateur Championship

Jun 26, 2019

After the first round of the 97 the Indiana Women’s Amateur Championship, Julia Potter-Bobb, Annabelle Pancake, and Alexis Miestowski lead the field after firing even-par, 70s at Kokomo Country Club in Kokomo, Ind.

All three players had two birdies on their front nines, but only Pancake, Zionsville, made the turn under par.

“I hit a lot of greens so I set myself up for birdie,” Pancake said. “I made some putts and I was hitting my driver really well which is key on this course.”

Potter-Bobb, Indianapolis, got off to a hot start with two birdies in her first two holes but gave three shots back due to three-putts.

“I hit a lot of greens in regulation,” Potter-Bobb said. “I was putting myself in positions to make putts, but then on the flip-side my only bogeys came from three putts so I’ll definitely have to work on my lag putting and distance.”

The only major mistake of the day for Miestowski came on the par 3, 2nd hole where she doubled bogeyed. But she proved resilient making three birdies later in the round, including a finishing birdie on 18.

“I hit my fairway woods pretty well,” Miestowski said. “I wasn’t able to hit many drivers off the tee today but was playing smart and setting myself up well. Whenever I missed a green, my short game was pretty tight today.”

The tight layout and small greens at Kokomo Country Club proved to be the biggest key to success in round one.

“You’re not going to be able to score out here if you don’t put yourself in a good position,” Potter-Bobb said. “I think I really did a great job of that today.”

The Indiana Women’s State Amateur will continue with round two on Thursday, June 27th with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m.
