Clouser Pulls Away to Capture IGA Mid-Amateur Championship

McCormick Clouser entered the final round of the IGA Mid-Amateur Championship at South Bend Country Club with a two-stroke advantage, but there was little room to get comfortable. After a competitive opening round on Thursday, Matt Vogt remained within striking distance, setting up a Friday battle between two players looking to make a move as the championship unfolded.

Vogt applied pressure early in the final round. After a bogey on No. 2, he immediately responded with a birdie on the third and added birdies on both front-nine par 5s, Nos. 5 and 7. But each time Vogt made a move, Clouser seemed to have an answer. Clouser remained steady through his opening four holes before making birdie on No. 5, then delivered one of the biggest moments of his round with an eagle on the par-5 seventh. Another birdie followed on No. 8, sending Clouser to the turn in 4-under 33 while Vogt made the turn in 2-under 35.

Clouser’s strong play was consistent with what he had experienced throughout the championship. He felt comfortable with his ball striking and had largely kept trouble off his scorecard, but the biggest difference Friday was that opportunities on the greens were beginning to turn into birdies. “I was just hitting it well, and I didn’t make very many putts yesterday, and they started to fall today,” Clouser said. “I just played fine and avoided some big mistakes and played good.”

The championship took another turn following a rain delay early on the back nine. When play resumed, Clouser made consecutive bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11, giving Vogt and the rest of the field an opportunity to close the gap. Vogt continued to play steady golf and kept his final-round scorecard clean on the back nine, and Clouser was well aware that the advantage he had built was beginning to shrink.

“I was watching it,” Clouser said of the leaderboard. “I knew with those couple bogeys, I got a little bit back in the thick of things, and just, I don’t know, maybe that helped me play a little better coming down the stretch.”

Whatever pressure Clouser felt, his response was immediate. He bounced back from the consecutive bogeys with birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 14, quickly regaining the shots he had lost and putting himself firmly back in control of the championship. Vogt added a birdie on 13 and continued to keep bogeys off his card, but Clouser’s run made it increasingly difficult to cut into the lead.

Clouser continued to build his advantage as the final holes approached. On the par-3 17th, he converted a strong birdie putt before a well-placed drive on the par-5 18th gave him another opportunity to finish the championship with a birdie. He converted, completing a stretch of five birdies over his final seven holes and closing with a 5-under 67. Vogt finished his own impressive final round with a birdie on 18 for a bogey-free 2-under back nine and a 4-under 68, but Clouser’s closing stretch proved too much to overcome.

“After the rain delay, I made a couple bogeys the first two holes after that, and I was kind of trying to get them back and started playing really well,” Clouser said. “Just good shots, and my putts were rolling good all week, and nothing really dropped until the last couple holes there.”

Clouser finished the championship at 9-under par, five strokes ahead of Vogt at 4-under. John Farrelly finished third at 2-under. For Clouser, the victory was built on strong ball striking, timely putting and an ability to respond when the championship briefly tightened around him. His eagle on No. 7 helped build the advantage, but his response following the rain delay ultimately ensured he would maintain it.

For all that went right over two days at South Bend Country Club, Clouser kept his assessment of the week characteristically simple.

“I just felt like I played fine,” Clouser said. “Had a good attitude and just went out there and played golf and finally did something decent.”

“Something decent” turned out to be a 9-under performance, a five-stroke victory and the 2026 IGA Mid-Amateur Championship.
