Carter & Stephens Win IGA Senior Team Championship

Apr 21, 2017

The team of Ron Carter and Bob Stephens fired the low round of the tournament in the final round at Kokomo C.C. to take home the Indiana Golf Association Senior Team Championship title. Bolstered by birdies on six of their first seven holes, in the Four Ball format, the pair fired a final round 5-under-par 65 to win by a shot over Dave Vlasic and Cortie Wilson.

Carter and Stephens began the final round one-shot back of three teams, but had the lead alone after a birdie on the par-4 7th, which was already their fifth of the day. “The only thing that changed was we were one back and we had to apply pressure,” said Carter. “We played putts a little more aggressive and straighter.” Under-par holes were at a premium for the two days, with no teams posting two bogey-free rounds and all but one team with multiple bogeys on the card. “I think the bogeys were because of the wind,” said Stephens, “and the greens had enough undulation to make chipping and some putts difficult to read.”
This was the first Indiana Golf event hosted at Kokomo C.C. since tornadoes caused major damage to the facility last August and the first time many players had been back since. “You could see the obvious damage,” said Stephens, “but it was in great shape and they’ve done a good job to recover as well as they have.” Having always been a course requiring an emphasis on accuracy, Carted added, “The course looked the same to me, like a bowling alley.”
