Cailyn Henderson Leads all Three Days of the IWGA Am

Jul 1, 2022

After three days and 54 holes of golf at Delaware Country Club, Cailyn Henderson of Westfield has come out of the 2022 IWGA State Amateur victorious. Henderson closed out the first round with a small one stroke lead, but was able to garner an additional stroke after the second round, to go into the final round two strokes over Julia Potter-Bobb of Indianapolis.

Henderson and Potter-Bobb continued their battle on the back nine today, where Hendersons four stroke lead diminished to only one stroke after hole 14. Henderson was able to get those strokes back paring out 15-17, and thus giving her a four stroke lead with only one hole remaining in the final round. The last hole was a smooth ride for Henderson, where she was able to snag a par, keep her lead, and claim the 2022 title.

Henderson mentioned that she has been working really hard on her short game, which was boldly highlighted in today's round.

“I just went in with my game plan and said alright, let's hit fairways and greens. I did not hit many fairways, but the greens were definitely better” said Henderson.

The closest Henderson has ever been to winning the IWGA Am was in 2020, where she finished 2-under par.

“It feels really good just to win because I’ve been playing on some mini professional tours and it is hard to win. So winning has just meant a lot more to me now because I'm like okay, I see that hard work paying off and it just feels really good” said Henderson.

Potter-Bobb’s final round, 75 was enough to give her the sole runner-up spot, even after a few tough holes on the back.

“I just could never get comfortable today. So not only was I fighting to try and get in the lead, but I was also fighting myself a little bit. I hit some great shots, clutch shots, but it wasn't all there, and that's okay” said Potter-Bobb.

Potter-Bobb added “Henderson played great, she answered when she needed to answer, and she honestly played smart when she was in trouble on hole 14. That could have gone a lot of different ways and instead she made a really strong bogey to keep her one shot lead”.
