Bates and Wenning Capture Senior/Super-Senior Titles, IGA Finals Tomorrow

Jul 23, 2015

Dave Bates of Newburg grabbed his first ever IGA title this morning at the IGA Super-Senior Match Play Championship at Harrison Lake CC.  Bates defeated Greg Hardin of Greenwood during the final match in a 5 and 4 fashion.

“I played very steady this week,” Bates said.  “I kept the ball in play and I hit a lot of greens.”

Bates got off to a good start, making a necessary twenty foot par putt on the par-4, 1st to keep things all square.  He closed out Hardin on the par-4, 14th with a par to win the match.

“I’ve worked hard and I take the game very seriously,” Bates said.  “I’ve played a lot of tournament golf and have finished towards the top of the leaderboard, but I’ve never won a state event before.  This feels like a great accomplishment.”

Chuck Wenning of Franklin battled the tremendous Indiana Senior field and grabbed his first IGA title this week at the IGA Senior Match Play Championship.  74 was the highest score to get into Senior Match Play, which says a lot about the strong competition.

“Everything I hit was solid this week,” Wenning said.  “During the qualifier, my goal was to make pars.  During match play I tried to stick to my game plan.  Playing against such tremendous players, I feel fortunate to have won the event.”

Wenning defeated Dave Williamson of Crawfordsville during this morning’s match 2 and 1 and went on to face Defending Champion Gordie Rees.  Wenning got off to a good start in the Rees match and was 3-up through 6 holes.  He went on to defeat Rees 3 and 2 after making par on the par-4, 16th.

“I retired a little over a year ago and it is great to finally be out here,” Wenning said.  “I have gotten to know all of these guys and it’s a blast.  I’m really enjoying the feeling of winning the event and I look forward to many more tournaments to come.”

The final match of the IGA Match Play Championship has been set.  Vince Drahman of Noblesville defeated Joshua Oldham, Greenwood, during the round of 8 in a 1-up fashion.  He went on to beat Broden Chapman, Mooresville, 5 and 4.  Drahman will play Zack Carrabine, Bargersville, in the finals tomorrow.  Carrabine defeated Patrick Kundenreich, Yorktown, 7 and 6, this morning and Timothy Hildebrand of Carmel 4 and 3.
